Silent vigil in Sligo today marking Transgender Day of Remembrance

A silent vigil is taking place this afternoon at Stephen Street car park in Sligo from 2pm to 2:15pm to remember those in the transgender community that have passed away.

The event is being organised by the adult peer support group Trans Northwest as part of Transgender Awareness Week.

Max Ó’Flynn, a spokesperson in the Sligo transgender community says today, the 20th of November is Transgender Day of Remembrance.

He says transgender people are at a higher risk of taking their own lives or being murdered simply because they are transgender.

Max also says that in some ways things have improved for the community in recent times but work still needs to be done addressing prejudice and discrimination.
