Major development for Sligo megalithic site

A Sligo megalithic site has been selected to go on the Tentative List for world heritage site status.

The site centres around the Carrowmore area, which has the largest cemetery of megalithic tombs in Ireland in the heart of the Coolera Peninsula.

An area of huge prehistoric significance, Carrowmore has more than 30 stone tombs, the most ancient among them being close to 6,000 years old.

Cllr Donal Gilroy, chairman of the Sligo Heritage Forum, says the step toward world heritage site status is a massive boost for the county.

He says it will also help to give worldwide recognition to Sligo’s rich megalithic and neolithic heritage and archaeology.
