Initiative to encourage uptake of breastfeeding taking place at Sligo University Hospital

A new initiate that was launched by Sabina Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin is taking place at Sligo University Hospital this week to mark National Breastfeeding week.

The antenatal education team at the Hospital are distributing Colostrum Harvesting Packs to pregnant women as a way to increase breastfeeding initiation rates.

The packs will allow pregnant women to express and store Colostrum before their baby is born, which will reduce the risk of a new-born being supplemented with formula instead of breast milk.

Marla Kennedy, the Antenatal Education Midwife Manager at Sligo University Hospital, says breast milk has provides numerous health benefits that formula cannot.
