Local authorities need more powers for local housing says local TD

A local TD doesn’t believe the government’s Housing for all plan does enough to address the high cost of rents in the country.

Independent Deputy, Marian Harkin raised the matter with Minister for Housing, Darragh O’Brien, in the Dail recently where she used residents in Berlin, Germany as an example where they recently voted to buy out corporate landlords.

She believes local authorites need to be at the centre of any housing plan going forward.

Deputy Harkin says the number of people on housing waiting lists in Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal is a prime example where the ‘redtape is mind boggling.’
