Parts of the north west will not have high speed broadband until 2026

A Leitrim Councillor is calling for the rollout process of the National Broadband Plan to be examined as a matter of urgency.

It’s emerged that broadband roll-out by National Broadband Ireland will only be able to provide fibre broadband to around 50% of the homes which were due to have access to the service this year.

NBI had originally targeted to provide the service 115,000 by the end of the year, but they now expect to be in a position to provide the service to just over 60,000.

Some areas in the Northwest are not due to receive fibre broadband until 2026.

Sinn Fein Councillor, Padraig Fallon says something needs to be done as broadband is a necessity for most homes.
