Leitrim jockey out for several months after US fall

A Leitrim jockey is recovering in the United States following a fall during a race in Indiana this week.

Drumshanbo’s Declan Cannon, who’s been based in the US since 2015, fractured three vertabrae when his mount Zoikes clipped heels in the fifth race.

Cannon was knocked unconscious in the incident and was hosptialised overnight.

The injuries are set to keep him out of racing for several months.

Cannon, who is 33 years of age, has had 300 race winners as a jockey since relocating to the United States six years ago.

Friends of the Cannon family have set up a recovery fund on the GoFundMe website, which has already raised in excess of $50,000 (US).
