Sligo Primary School pupils to learn French from a robot

Pupils in five Primary Schools across Co. Sligo are to get help learning French from a robot.

The walking and talking robot, called ‘Nao’, is capable of assisting teachers with a variety of subjects such as music, art and sport.

Fitted with numerous sensors, it can interact with it’s environment by recognizing people and objects.

Debbie Woodward, IT Sligo Researcher in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Social Robotics in Education, says ‘Nao’ can be another tool for teachers to help teach children.

She says with class sizes being among the highest in Europe, it’s hoped robots like ‘Nao’ could alleviate some of the pressures for teachers.
