Ireland relay team finish eighth in Olympic final



North Sligo Athletic Club’s Christopher O’Donnell and the Ireland 4×400 metres mixed relay team finished eighth in Saturday’s Olympic final in Tokyo.

Running in lane 1, the quarter of Cillin Greene, Phil Healy, Sophie Becker and Christopher O’Donnell were never really in medal contention.

They finished ahead of Germany and just behind Jamaica in a time of 3mins 15.06secs.

The race was won by Poland, with the United States and the Dominican Republic, the two countries who were originally disqualified from Ireland’s semi-final heat before before re-instated, finishing second and third respectively.
