Emergency funding needed to address issues at Sligo University Hospital

A local TD is calling for emergency funding to cover the cost of hiring extra staff at Sligo University Hospital.

The hospital has been among the worst hit in the country in recent times when it comes to those waiting for a bed with a total of 491 waiting this month including 34 in a single day on the 5th of July.

Sinn Fein Sligo/Leitrim TD, Martin Kenny has been told by patients they have witnessed others go into cardiac arrest or suffer a seizure while waiting for a bed.

He says he understands patients wait 12 to 18 hours for a bed with some waiting upto 48 hours.

Deputy Kenny has written to the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly requesting him to urgently provide funding.

Speaking to OceanFM News, he says it’s impossible for the staff to cope with the situation who are doing ‘trojan’ work.
