Two Sligo paralympians set for Tokyo

Sligo already has two Olympians competing at the Tokyo Olympics in swimmer Mona McSharry and athlete Christopher O’Donnell.

The county can now also look forward to supporting two Sligo sportsmen who’ll be part of the Team Ireland Paralympics team in Japan next month.

Para-cyclist Martin Gordon (pictured below ), along with tandem partner Eamonn Byrne (Dublin) has been selected to compete in three cycling events in Toyko.

He’s from Hazelwood in Calry and is a past pupil of Sligo Grammar School.

Gordon works by day as a barrister in Dublin – but has taken time off this year to prepare for the Tokyo Games.

(L-R) Eamonn Byrne and Sligo paracyclist Martin Gordon are heading to Tokyo.

Rosses Point’s Patrick Flanagan will also swim for Ireland in the S8 class.

Flanagan has spent much of his life based in Longford, but the family home is now in Rosses Point.

It means Sligo has a special distinction of having four athletes representing Team Ireland across this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Tokyo Paralympics take place from Tuesday, August 24th to Sunday, September 5th, 2021.
