Donegal Road Safety Officer says speed remains a factor in fatalities

Donegal County Council’s Road Safety Officer says speed remains the biggest issue when it comes to safety on the roads.

His comments follow a new report by An Garda Siochana and the Road Safety Authority which found that 82% of roads since January 2021 have been on rural roads with a speed limit of 80km/hr or more.

There has been 12% fewer road collisions and deaths compared to this time last year; however, two people have lost their lives in Donegal this year, one in Sligo and none in Leitrim.

The hours of 12pm to 4pm are the most dangerous time for travelling.

Road Safety Officer with Donegal County Council Brian O’Donnell says that as restrictions ease, more and more people will be using our roads.
