North West septic tanks are failing inspections



The Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council is calling for a government scheme to be introduced when it comes to the upgrading of domestic septic tank systems

 

Nationally 54 % of domestic septic tanks failed inspections last year.

 

The Environmental Protection Agency says 23% were a risk to human health or the environment.

 

 

When it comes to inspections carried out between 2013 and 2020 Donegal registered a failure rate of 89%, 82 % of tanks failed in Sligo while in Leitrim the failure rate was 46%

 

Sligo Fianna Fáil Cathaoirleach Paul Taylor says the current grants available do not go far enough to tackle the problem.

 

He’s calling on the government to allocate more resources to the issue.  Cllr. Taylor says that there are large numbers of people award that their tanks need to be updated but the costs associated with the upgrading are preventing them from taking the necessary action:
