Sligo get the expected championship lesson from Mayo

Sligo were outclassed by defending champions Mayo in Saturday’s Connacht football championship quarter-final at Markievicz Park, as last year’s All-Ireland finalist ran out convincing 3-23 to 0-12 winners.

The game followed the expected form lines as Sligo, despite a bright opening, were soon overrun by a powerful Mayo outfit with team captain Aidan O’Shea helping himself to two first-half goals.

Darren McHale also impressed at centre half-forward as Mayo led by 3-13 to 0-8 at half-time.

The contest resembled a challenge game in the second 35 minutes as Mayo coasted to a semi-final meeting with Leitrim in two week’s time (July 11th).

The result ends Sligo championship summer for 2021 – as there are no qualifiers this year.
