Site of MacClancys Castle should be utilised to attract tourists to North West

The local authority in Leitrim is being called upon to maximise the potential of ‘MacClancys Castle’ which is situated on the shores of Lough Melvin.

MacClancy’s Castle currently lies in ruin, but historically it has massive significance.

Captain Francisco de Cuellar from one of the ill-fated ships of the Spanish Armada was shipwrecked near Streedagh Beach in Grange in 1588 and sought refuge in MacClancy’s Castle.

As a result, the location is an integral part of the De Cuellar Trail.

Manorhamilton MD Councillor Justin Warnock is urging Leitrim County Council to start the conversation with local landowners about access to the foreshore to enhance the experience for the Irish and Spanish tourists.
