Support being sought to remove bollards in Strandhill

A Sligo councillor is to ask his colleagues to support his call for the council to remove the controversial bollards at the seafront in Strandhill.

Fianna Fail Councillor Tom MacSharry has a motion to this effect on the agenda for this coming Monday’s meeting of the county council.

The bollards — erected to prevent people congregating as part of Covid prevention measures — have evoked passionately different opinions.

They were even mentioned during a Dail debate by Cllr MacSharry’s cousin, Deputy Marc Mac Sharry, who said if the Nazis had erected them for D-Day, God knows what the outcome of World War II would have been.

Whether the actual decision is, ultimately, a councillors’ or council executive function, remains unclear.

However, with the vaccination rollout, Cllr Tom MacSharry believes it’s time to remove the bollards.
