Local property tax exemption doesn’t ‘scratch the surface’ for mica and pyrite homeowners

A local property tax exemption for homeowners affected by mica and pyrite “doesn’t scratch the surface” of what’s needed to resolve issues with the government’s redress scheme, according to a campaign group.

Yesterday it was announced that people eligible for its defective block grant scheme will have the tax waived temporarily.

The scheme, which sees 90 percent of the cost covered by the state, has faced criticism from homeowners for being unaffordable.

Many homes in Donegal, Sligo and Mayo are affected by the defective blocks.

Spokesperson for the Mica Action Group, Michael Doherty, says the Finance Minister’s announcement was ‘symbolic’ at best.
