Minister Harris hosting meeting about Technological University on Monday



The Minister for Higher Education, Simon Harris is hosting a cross party meeting this coming Monday with all Oireachtas members in the north west deputies about the Connacht Ulster Alliance Technological University.

Teachers Union of Ireland representatives at IT Sligo, GMIT and LYIT voted in favour of forming the University and are due to formally submit their application.

Minister Simon Harris says today is a ‘historic day’ for higher education in the north west.

Speaking to OceanFM News this evening, he says access to university education will become more accessible and will help with regional development.

Independent Sligo/Leitrim TD, Marian Harkin, who will be in attendance at Mondays meeting says St. Angela’s College has signed a memorandum of understanding with ITSligo.

Speaking to OceanFM News, she believes St. Angela’s will play a ‘very important role’ as part of the University.

ITSligo President, Dr. Brendan McCormack is hopeful of the University opening officially from January 2022.

He tells OceanFM News that being designated as a University Town brings many benefits.
