Patrick Flanagan reaches European final

Rosses Point’s Paralympic hopeful Patrick Flanagan is through to the final of the men’s 400 metres freestyle at the European Swimming Championships in Madeira, Portugal.

The 23-year-old finished fourth in his semi-final heat on Wednesday morning, in a time of 5:44.29.

That was good enough to qualify for this evening’s final, which is scheduled for 5:35pm today.

The final can be watched live online here.

Flanagan, who grew up in Longford but has strong family connections in Sligo, has already achieved the Olympic qualifying time for Tokyo in  the 400m freestyle.

However, there Paralympic qualification process has two stages to it – as Patrick explained to Ocean FM Sport’s Austin O’Callaghan in a recent interview.

Flanagan’s European final will be happening around the same time as fellow Sligonian Mona McSweeney goes in the final of the women’s 100m breaststroke at the European Aquatics Championships in Budapest today.
