Sheep farmers urged to drive hard bargain when selling lambs

The IFA National Sheep vice-chairman is urging farmers to be careful of price quotes from factories for lambs.

Demand for lamb is outweighing supplies and, as a result, factories are paying well above quoted prices to secure numbers.

However, the practice of quoting prices which fails to reflect the market is angering farmers and undermining producer groups that have made commitments to factories.

Leitrim farmer and IFA National Sheep committee vice chair Kevin Comiskey is urging farmers to ‘sell hard’ when it comes to moving lambs.

He says factories are paying more than they are quoting.
