Clarity sought over Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme

A number of local TD’s are seeking clarity over details in the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme.

Deputies were debating a resolution to the scheme in the Dail recently with many calling for an extension beyond March 31st.

Sligo/Leitrim TD, Marc MacSharry believes clarity is needed for those working from home who can claim a small daily relief to help with costs built up such as broadband and electrical bills.

He says it’s not clear if the employee or employer claim the funds.

Deputy MacSharry also believes the current deadline of March 31st will need to be extended.

Sligo/Leitrim Independent TD, Marian Harkin says there is an issue with extra tax liabilities for recipients of the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme.

Deputy harkin highlighted the fact that she raised this issue as far back as May 2020 where she was told it wouldn’t be an issue for most workers.

She told of a person who received a tax bill of over €1,200 and says they and many others are building up a further bill for next year.

While Sinn Fein TD, Pearse Doherty, says the scheme needs to remain in place for the medium term.

He says workers and employers need long term assurances beyond March.
