Dáil motion offers assistance with utility bills

Sinn Féin will bring a motion before the Dail today which will aim to help workers and families who are struggling to pay heating and electricity bills.

Under current regulations, people must be unemployed for over 15 months before they are entitled to financial support with their heating costs.

The motion that will go before the Dail will call for PUP recipients to be entitled to the Fuel Allowance.

It also seeks to put in place a double payment of the Fuel Allowance for two weeks in February and calls on the Government to establish an initial discretionary Covid fund of €5 million to help households with utility debt and arrears.

Donegal TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn says the current support measures have not been altered to meet the challenges being posed by the Covid-19 Pandemic.
