MacSharry: ‘Grass roots, parliamentary party expect change in FF leadership’

There is a broad expectation among grass roots and parliamentary party members of Fianna Fail that a change in leadership will be required in advance of the next general election.

That’s according to Sligo/Leitrim Fianna Fail TD Marc MacSharry in reaction to an article in yesterday’s Sunday Independent newspaper in which former agriculture minister Brian Cowen said the Taoiseach should not lead his party into the next general election.

Last July, the Taoiseach sacked Deputy Cowen from his position as agriculture minister after just 17 days.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, Deputy MacSharry said he did not believe there now was ‘sour grapes’ on the part of Deputy Dowen.

But Deputy MacSharry added that it was incumbent on a leader to be aware and conscious of their own popularity and value to the party in their leadership.

He said that although fighting the Covid pandemic was now the priority, there were internal party matters to be dealt with in Fianna Fail.
