Metal Man conservation works completed

Conservation works have been completed on Sligo’s Metal Man.

The works were funded by a €25,000 grant from the Historic Structures Fund which was matched by Sligo County Council.

It proved challenging, with workers only able to carry out repairs for 2 or 3 hours some days due to the beacons location in the water.

The navigation beacon at Rosses Point that was first erected in 1821 points towards Oyster Island off the coast of Sligo and has a twin Metal Man in Tramore, Co. Waterford.

Siobhán Ryan, Heritage Officer with Sligo County Council, says the Metal Man will be great shape for it’s 200th anniversary next year.
