Sligo Rovers ‘Europe’ hopes fade after Shels loss

Sligo Rovers hopes of securing a top-four finish in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division faded on Sunday evening when they were beaten 1-0 by Shelbourne at Tolka Park.

The home side deserved their as their work-rate and desire was superior to Rovers on the evening.

Gary Deegan’s first-half goal proved to be the matchwinner.

With two league games to go, Rovers remain in sixth place in the table, but there is increasing uncertainty about whether the season will finish, given the growing Covid-19 numbers in recent weeks.

On the plus side for Sligo Rovers, the game marked the return of defender John Mahon to action, eight-and-a-half months after his leg break.

The Collooney man came through the game unscathed.
