IT Sligo president says college ‘highly honoured’ by Hume link



The close links between John Hume and IT Sligo are also being recalled today

The Nobel Peace Prize Laureate visited the IT in June 2011 for the opening of a muti-purpose hall named in his honour.

On that occasion, Hume said he was a strong believer that education and educational institutions should act as community connectors.

As Mr Hume’s visit fell on the same day as WB Yeats’ birthday, the IT Sligo President at the time, Professor Terri Scott, presented him with a framed photo of Benbulben with an inscription from one of Yeats’ poems, The Wanderings of Oisin.

Today, the current president of IT Sligo, Dr Brendan McCormack, told Ocean FM News the college was ‘highly honoured’ that the late Mr Hume was willing to be associated with the college:
