FAI board approves decision to resume League of Ireland

The FAI’s board has approved the plan to restart the SSE Airtricity League season.

The league will resume on July 31st, with the top flight shortened to eighteen games per side.

The Board backed the ruling of the National League Executive Committee earlier this week.

It means that the relegation scenario for this season will remain as follow:

The team that finishes bottom of the Premier Division will be automatically relegated and the First Division champions will be promoted.

The team that finishes in ninth place in the top flight will play off against a team that finishes between second and fifth in the First Division

Nine Premier Division clubs, including Sligo Rovers, had voted against the plan because it could see two teams relegated at the end of a shortened league season.

Those clubs now have 72 hours in which to appeal.
