Leitrim in relegation battle after Offaly loss

Leitrim’s hopes of preserving their Division 3 status in the Allianz Football League suffered a setback on Sunday when they were beaten by Offaly in Carrick-on-Shannon on a final scoreline of Offaly 2-16 Leitrim 0-14.

Terry Hyland’s side performed commendably in the opening 35 minutes to lead by 0-9 to 0-8 at the interval.

But they lost their way after the resumption and two second-half goals from Offaly were the decisive scores. John Maughan’s side outscored their opponents by 2-8 to 0-5 in the second-half – a period which also saw Leitrim’s Shane Quinn red-carded.

Listen to the Leitrim manager’s postmatch assessment:

With three games to go against Louth (away), Down (away) and Tipperary (home), Leitrim face an uphill battle to stay in Division 3. They are currently second from bottom on one point – and face bottom-of-the-table Louth in Drogheda next Sunday (2pm).
