Walsh says FG strategy was wrong in Sligo-Leitrim

Fine Gael general election candidate Thomas Walsh has expressed his disappointment with Party HQ over the way it handled the 2020 General Election in the Sligo-Leitrim constituency.

The Sligo Councillor looks unlikely to secure a seat and has criticised the election strategy Fine Gael used locally – a strategy which looks likely to see them losing the seat the seat they won in 2016.

Speaking on Ocean F, the first-time general election candidate identified the disastrous selection process which resulted in him only being selected as a candidate in December when he eventually replaced Cllr Sinead Maguire who had pulled out of the race.

Walsh raised further concern over the way the constituency was divided between his running mate, Frank Feighan and himself claiming that only being allocated 95% of Sligo was not a sufficient enough of the divide and always left him on the back foot.

During the explosive interview Thomas Walsh said he was disappointed the Party’s outgoing TD, Tony McLoughlin in the constituency whom he accused of canvasing with Frank Feighan and ignoring his calls for support during the past week.

Walsh says it’s a bad day all round for Fine Gael with high profile losses being reported in different parts of the country.

Walsh also said the Party suffered from being disconnected with the electorate and from his own campaign trail he sensed that the public were in a mood for change.
