Local investment to benefit Fine Gael in election

It’s day one of the formal general election campaign with parties setting out their stalls ahead of next month’s vote.

A  Fine Gael candidate says he believes the party has every chance of retaining its seat in the Sligo Leitrim/South Donegal/North Roscommon constituency.

It follows confirmation yesterday from former TD and MEP Marian Harkin will be running as an Independent candidate.

Former Fine Gael TD and Junior Minister John Perry is also running.

Sligo/Drumcliffe Area Councillor Thomas Walsh is one of the two Fine Gael candidates contesting the four seat constituency, along with his party running mate, Senator Frank Feighan.

Cll. Walsh says that despite some heavyweight political opponents in the field, recent government investment in Sligo will persuade the electorate to return at least one Fine Gael candidate to the next Dail.
