Tom MacSharry: FF government unlikely to hold RIC commemoration

The Fianna Fail cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council says there is a strong feeling within his party that if it is in government, any commemoration of the RIC will be cancelled entirely.

Cllr Tom MacSharry was speaking following a meeting of Sligo County Council this morning at which a motion from Sinn Fein Councillor Chris MacManus calling on the government not to have any commemoration of the RIC or the Black and Tans was passed unanimously.

During a debate on the motion, councillors recalled handed-down recollections of atrocities committed by the RIC and Black and Tans, including some cases where ancestors of their own families were the victims.

Councillors said because of that, the RIC and the Black and Tans were not worthy of a commemoration.

Cllr MacSharry said he had received an invitation to the proposed commemoration but had declined it.
