Donegal win in Derry to reach McKenna Cup semi-finals

Donegal are through to semi-finals of the Dr McKenna Cup following Wednesday night’s 1-10 to 0-8 win against Derry at Celtic Park.

Caolan Ward’s second-half goal was the key score in a game that saw Declan Bonner’s side finish top of Section A with two wins out of two. Monaghan have also qualified for Sunday’s semi-finals as the best runners up.

Donegal beat Monaghan by a point (1-12 to 0-14) last Sunday – and the two will meet again this weekend. The competition format had pre-determined that the Section A winners (Donegal) would play the best runners-up from the group stages (Monaghan).

In Wednesday night’s other games, Down beat Antrim to top Section B. They will play the holders Tyrone who won Section C with a 3-18 to 3-15 win against Armagh at the Athletic Grounds.

Wednesday’s results:
Section A: Derry 0-8 Donegal 1-10
Section B: Down 2-17 Antrim 0-16
Section C: Armagh 3-15 Tyrone 3-18

Sunday’s semi-finals – both 2pm
Donegal v Monaghan (venue tbc)
Down v Tyrone  (Athletic Grounds).
