Tributes paid to former Sligo Mayor John Harrison

The death has occurred of a former mayor of Sligo, John Harrison.

A Fianna Fail councillor, he was a former member of Sligo Corporation, later Sligo Borough Council, a former secretary of Feis Shligigh and a former principal of Ballinode Community College.

He was also among those accorded the town’s highest honour, Freeman of the Borough; he was given that distinction in December 1997.

Having topped the poll at local elections, he was known as an alderman.

He was father of Garda Inspector Michael Harrison, who is based in Letterkenny.

Sligo’s longest-serving councillor Declan Bree remembers his former corporation colleague.
