Patton’s penalty save gives Donegal winning start

A penalty save in added time from Donegal goalkeeper Shaun Patton helped give his team a winning start to the group stages of the McKenna Cup on Sunday when they beat Monaghan in MacCumhaill Park in Ballybofey bu 1-12 to 0-14.

Donegal were two points up when Monaghan were awarded the penalty. Patton stopped Shane Carey’s initial shot and the subsequent rebound.

He spoke to Alan Foley of the Donegal Sport Hub about that vital intervention:

Monaghan, who beat Derry last weekend, led by 0-9 to 0-7 at half-time. But they were pinned back by a youthful Donegal side with St Naul’s Peader Mogan finding the net in the second half.

Donegal now need a draw against Rory Gallagher’s Derry in Celtic Park this Wednesday night (8pm) to reach the semi-finals next weekend.

Dr McKenna Cup – Section A
Donegal 1-12 Monaghan 0-14

Section B
Antrim 2-8 Fermanagh 0-13

Section C
