Sligo man named locally as Galway assault victim



The man who died after allegedly been assaulted in an incident in County Galway yesterday morning has been named locally as Charles Townsend, of Union, Ballisodare in Sligo.

Mr. Townsend, who was in his 60’s, was a well known local osteopath.

A man in his 70s remains in Garda custody this evening in connection with the death of Mr Townsend.

The alleged assault occurred at a house in Ballinahown in Connemara shortly after 9am yesterday morning.

Mr Townsend had been taken to University Hospital Galway after the incident, where he later died.

A post mortem exam is due to be carried out by the State Pathologist.

The man taken into custody is being questioned at Galway Garda Station.
