Sligo University Hospital celebrates World Prematurity Day



Sligo University Hospital welcomes World Prematurity Day today to raise the Global Awareness for the challenge of a preterm birth.

The day which is typical celebrated on the 17th of November, will be celebrated amongst those on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and across Sligo University Hospital today.

More than 1 in 10 babies are born prematurely with 4, 500 babies born nationwide which is before the 37 week gestation period. Last year, the Sligo NICU unit delivered care to 90 babies who are often too small and too fragile to hold or touch.

Paediatric Consultant at Sligo University Hospital, Dr Dara Gallagher spoke to Ocean FM news this afternoon about why this day is so important for the parents and the staff involved:
