Traveller family to be moved from Connaughton Road car park

It’s believed new efforts are underway to move an extended Traveller family from a Sligo town local authority public car park, where they have lived for more than 30 years.

Ocean FM News understands a notice has been issued in respect of members of the McGinley family, who are in the Connaughton Road Car Park.

It’s believed Sligo County Council is offering them alternative facilities in another part of Sligo town, with a date by which to move out.

In the past, members of the family have insisted they are willing to move if offered acceptable accommodation.

However, it has never been possible to reach agreement on housing between the local authority and the family.

In recent times, the council has been more assertive in its control of the car park, having engaged in a Garda-supported clean-up operation and reducing the area in which caravans could be located by laying down heavy concrete barriers.

The most recent attempt to house some family members —  in a Sligo town estate — were unsuccessful after vandalism and alleged attempted arson at the house
