McGinleys say they have been given until Thursday to leave Connaughton Road Car Park in Sligo

Members of the Traveller family living in a Sligo town local authority car park for more than 30 years say they have been given until this Thursday to leave.

If the McGinley family finally do depart from the public local authority Connaughton Road Car Park, it would mark the end of what has been, at times, a controversial three-decade saga over efforts to house the extended family.

Members of the McGinley family told Ocean FM News today they have been given until this Thursday to be gone from the car park.

They say they do not know where they will go.

However, Ocean FM News understands they have been offered facilities in another part of Sligo town.

Earlier today, members of the McGinley family told Ocean FM News that a council lorry arrived at the car park about 10:30 this morning carrying concrete barriers.

They said gardai then arrived, after which both the council lorry and the gardai left.

There are now just four caravans in the car park, as well as a number of vehicles and a broken-up structure at the bottom of the car park.

Sligo County Council has not commented on what’s happening.
