IMO consultant’s to take industrial action over pay equality

The Sligo-based chairperson of the Irish Medical Organisation’s consultants’ committee says they have no choice but to take action in effort to obtain pay equality.

Dr Clive Kilgallen, consultant histopathologist at Sligo University Hospital, says pay inequality has resulted in a consultant recruitment and retention crisis.

The IMO has now voted in favour of organising a ballot for industrial action.

Dr Kilgallen, who regularly presents post mortem results at inquests in Sligo, says doctors never want to take industrial action — but they are now frustrated and angry.
