Former Fianna Fail Councillor, Joe Shannon, has died.

Mr. Shannon was coopted onto Sligo County Council in 1982 after the death of his father, Joe Shannon.

He retained the seat until 1991 when the electoral areas were divided but returned once to the Council once again in 2003 following the departure of Eamon Scanlon who became a Senator.

Originally from Cloonloo, Gurteen, Co Sligo, he moved to Leitrim where he became heavily involved in St. Mary’s GAA Club.

The club paid tribute to mr. Shannon this morning describing him as ‘one of life’s true gentlemen.’

He is survived by his Wife Fiona, daughter Melissa and son Daire.
