West of Ireland champion Caolan Rafferty named on Walker Cup team

This year’s West of Ireland champion Caolan Rafferty has been named on the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup to play the United States next month.

The Walker Cup is amateur golf’s equivalent of the Ryder Cup.

Rafferty, who’s from Dundalk, won the West of Ireland by four shots last April.

He’s one of three Irish players in the team. Portmarnock’s Conor Purcell, who finished runner-up to Rafferty at this year’s ‘West’, and recent British amateur champion James Sugrue from Mallow are the other two.

The 2019 Walker Cup is being staged at Royal Liverpool in England on September 7 and 8th.

GB&I are bidding to win back the trophy after the USA secured a 19-7 victory in the 2017 match in Los Angelus.
