Sligo TD criticizes driving licence legislation which affects emigrants

A Sligo Leitrim Fianna Fáil TD claims emigrants returning to Ireland are being unfairly penalised under the current driving licence legislation.

Party spokesperson on Transport, Tourism, and Sport Marc MacSharry, says individuals returning home from the United States of America cannot exchange their valid American driving licences for the Irish equivalent.

Instead, they must apply for a learner permit and go on to sit the test in the same fashion as a learner driver.

The Sligo based TD has hit out at the inconsistency in the system which allows people returning or emigrating from other countries to exchange their licences for an Irish one.
