Donegal Co Co seeks public opinion on changes to Local Property Tax

Donegal County Council is seeking the public’s opinion on changing the Local Property Tax in the county for 2020.

The annual tax came into affect in 2013 and is a charge on residential properties.

In accordance with the Local Property Tax Act 2012, local authorities can increase or decrease the base rate by a maximum of 15%.

The money that’s collected is put towards a number of services such as libraries, public lighting, road maintenance, fire services and more.

If the rate is decreased, less funding will be available to provide this services while the council may also decide to keep it the same or increase it.

The deadline for submissions is the 16th of August.

The council would like to hear from people on any concerns they have on the potential effects it could have on households, businesses and council services.

All feedback will be considered when a decision is expected to be made in late September.

People can submit their views by email to lpt@donegalcoco.ie or posted to Donegal County Council, LPT Submissions, County House, Lifford, Co. Donegal.
