Sligo Traveller Support Group to play Gardaí in memory of Martin Mongan

At 8pm on Monday next, July 15, at the Sean Fallon Centre in the Showgrounds, teams from the Sligo Traveller Support group (STSG) and An Gardaí Síochána will face off in the 3rd annual Martin Mongan Memorial Shield match.

The game has been organised in memory of the late Martin Mongan, who lost his life tragically in a road accident on October 30, 2014.

Martin was the Men’s Development Worker with the STSG and had done vital and invaluable work for his community and is sadly missed by all who knew him.

This years game will be a fundraiser for the Northwest STOP group who do hugely in promoting positive mental health and provide free supports for anyone experiencing mental health problems.

Organiser of the match and Current Men’s Development worker with STSG Jamie Murphy said: “We are delighted to host the game fo the third time in memory of Martin and also very happy to support Northwest STOP who do such good work in the area of mental health.”

He continued: “For us it is a huge part of our work with suicide rates for Traveller men at least seven times higher than the rest of the population and six times higher for Traveller women. I’d encourage everyone to come down and watch the game and support this very worthy cause.”
