Late penalty denies Sligo minors ‘A’ final place

Sligo LGFA minor gaelic footballers were denied a place in this year’s Connacht minor ‘A’ championship final after conceded a penalty deep in added time, which Roscommon converted, to win by two points in Boyle, on a final scoreline of 4-4 to 0-14.

Three Roscommon goals in three first-half minutes helped the home side establish a 3-1 to 0-4 interval lead.

However, Sligo improved after the re-start outscoring Roscommon by 0-8 to 0-3 in the third quarter.

A Keeva Flynn point edged Sligo in front in the dying moments of the game but, deep in added time, Roscommon were awarded a penalty.

Up stepped the Roscommon goalkeeper and captain Leah McCawley to convert the penalty and give her side a dramatic two-point win.

The defeat means Sligo miss out on a place in the provincial ‘A’ championship final.

Galway’s win against Leitrim on Wednesday means they will face round-robin leaders Mayo in the main Connacht final.

That will be of some disappointment to Sligo, who had beaten Galway decisively in an early round of this year’s championship.

Instead, Keith McLoughlin’s side will play Roscommon again in the ‘B’ decider on Saturday, April 18th (2pm).

Sligo reached the All-Ireland ‘B’ championship final in 2023 so the Yeats girls will still harbour strong expectations in Connacht ‘B’ final.

The Sligo manager spoke to Ocean FM Sport’s Ronan Flanagan after Wednesday evening’s loss.
