Gormley fails to take seat in Ballymote/Tubbercurry area

Independent Councillor Willie Gormley has failed to take the seat on Sligo County Council held by his late aunt for more than 40 years and by her late father before that from 1942 to 1980.

Mr Gormley conceded defeat on the 10th count for the Ballymote/Tubbercurry area, which saw the election of Martin Baker (FF), and two Fine Gael candidates, Gerard Mullaney, a former councillor who lost his seat in the last election, and Martin Connolly, a new councillor.

Before the official announcement of the result at about 2:30am this morning, Mr Gormley congratulated the successful candidates on their success and wished them well.

Listen to his interview with Ocean FM here:

There are four new councillors on Sligo County Council: Donal Gilroy (FF), Thomas Walsh, Martin Connolly and Tom Fox (all FG).

Fine Gael’s Gerard Mullaney has also returned to the council, having lost his seat at the last election.
