Anti-fracking protest planned for this Saturday at Blacklion/Belcoo

An anti-fracking protest has been planned for this weekend following renewed fears the practice may be carried out just north of the border.

Energy company Tamboran Resources has restarted the process which could lead to fracking for natural gas in Fermanagh.

It has applied for a licence to evaluate the natural gas in the shale and sandstone rocks in the south west of the county close to the Leitrim border.

Fracking is now outlawed in the Republic of Ireland following a bill brought before the Dáil by outgoing Fine Gael TD Tony McLoughlin.

The protest will take place on Saturday on the bridge between Belcoo and Blacklion at 1pm and has been organised by the Green Party in Sligo, Leitrim and Fermanagh.

Green Party local election candidate in the Carrick on Shannon area Leslie O’Hora says there are serious concerns among residents in the area.
