North west farmers to benefit from increases in Basic Payments Scheme

Farmers in the west and north west are to benefit most from increases under the Basic Payments Scheme.

More than 3,360 Donegal farmers will receive extra money to bring them up to €160 per hectare.

Almost a third of farmers in Leitrim — just over 1,100 — will get more money.

The payments, to be made in the autumn, depend on the value of farmers’ existing entitlements.

Barry Cassidy, of the Irish Farmers Journal, says it’s all part of the ongoing flattening out of payments.
