Two cars stranded while returning from Coney Island

Sligo Bay Lifeboat was called to assist two cars after they became stranded while returning from Coney Island on Saturday.

Just after 5pm the lifeboat were tasked by the coastguard after two cars were caught by the tide coming back from the island.

The occupants of both cars made it to the shore safety, however both vehicles had to be abandoned.

The RNLI is advising people to text a dedicated number to get information on tide times before deciding to make a journey to the island.

People are asked to contact the -Text the Tide- messaging service by texting Coney to 51155 and it will send back a message with the safe times to cross.

Motorists are also being reminded it is important to drive close to the stone pillars which stretch the length of the causeway.
