Gardai to engage with local communities.

The Chief Super Intendent for Sligo Leitrim Garda Division says ‘garda stations are just bricks and mortar’ and what matters most is a garda presence in rural communities.

Aidan Glacken was commenting on the publication of an Oireachtas Justice Committee report which recommends rural communities should be compensated for the closure of garda station by having more gardai on patrol.

The report also recommends a dedicated community garda be assigned in each district to encourage engagement and act as a first point of contact.

Speaking at a Joint Policing Committee meeting Chief Super Intendent Glacken says they are continuing to engage with local communities.
