Former Sligo mayor disappointed town not included in May plebiscite

A former mayor of Sligo has expressed disappointment over the town not being included in a plebiscite to take place in May on directly-elected mayors.

The government has approved proposals for the role of a directly elected mayor to be created in Cork, Limerick and Waterford.

The mayors would have powers in housing, planning, roads and the corporate function of the council.

Those proposals will now be put to a public vote on the 24th May- the same day as the local and European Elections.

But Sligo is not included, despite over 1,000 signatures having been collected for a petition calling for the town to have a mayor directly elected by the people.

This was former Mayor Tom MacSharry’s reaction to Sligo’s exclusion.
